About Lake Pend Oreille

Lake Pend Oreille, sometimes referred to as Lake Ponderay, is the largest lake in Idaho and the fifth deepest in the entire United States. Nestled into the Northern Idaho Panhandle, it has been the top testing site for Navy submarines for over 65 years. With 111 miles of shoreline and beaches galore, it is the perfect destination for an Idaho lake vacation. Grab your picnic baskets and get ready to enjoy a day on the lake!

About the Area

Sandpoint is the largest town on the lake and is home to many restaurants and pubs. Many of the smaller towns also have a lot to offer- including our small town of Hope! Hope has some of the best waterfront restaurants on the lake, access to top fishing charters, and is removed from the hustle and bustle of Sandpoint. Other Lake Pend Oreille towns include Trestle Creek, Garfield, Dover, Bayview, Cedar Creek and Ponderay.

National Forests & The Lake

Lake Pend Oreille is surrounded by miles of national forests including the Coeur d’Alene National Forest and Kaniksu National Forest. These national forests offer endless trails for hiking and mountain biking. The area is home to many species of wildlife and is great for exploring! The lake draws several species of migratory birds during the winter months including a very large population of Ospreys.

While the national forests are a major perk, the lake is usually the main attraction! The 43-mile long lake is a hub for watersports, fishing and boating. There are many boat launches around the lake and local companies to rent everything from jet skis to sailboats to kayaks. Known for its large population of giant Rainbow Trout, Mackinaw and Kokanee Salmon, Lake Pend Oreille is an angler’s paradise.

Whether you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature or a place to play and explore, Lake Pend Oreille has something for everyone. Browse our local area guide for Lake Pend Oreille attractions and activities, local events, weather information and more!
